Eating Seasonally - Fresh is Best
Do you know about eating seasonally?
We get so used to having every different kind of fruit and vegetable available all year round, but a lot of varieties are just kept in cold storage for months and by the time we eat them, they really have very little nutrients left.
Seasonal fruits and vegetables produced on local farms are often fresher, as they do not require to be transported over long distances. Unlike out-of-season produce, which is often harvested early in order to be shipped and distributed to your local retail store, crops picked at their peak of ripeness are also better tasting and full of flavour. What’s more, studies have shown that fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when allowed to ripen naturally on the plant.
When you eat seasonally, food is fresher, tastier, and more nutritious than food consumed out of season. Even though we all like to eat strawberries all year round, the best time to eat them is when they can be purchased directly from a local grower shortly after harvest.
Where can you get the best produce in your area?
Purchasing locally grown foods helps support local farms and maintains farmland and open space in your community. Local food supports local businesses and the local economy. The money you spend on products from local farmers and growers stays in the community and is reinvested with other local businesses. In addition, food grown locally, processed locally, and distributed locally (for example, to local restaurants) generates jobs and subsequently helps stimulate your local economy.
Farmers’ Markets
Farmers’ markets bring many food producers together and offer a wide variety of seasonal regional produce picked fresh, sometimes even on the day of the market. They’re an easy, convenient, and fun way to find locally grown food and there are lots of them popping up across the country. The produce travels shorter distances to reach your plate, which means fewer greenhouse gases and fresher produce. It is often much easier to buy food free from plastic and packaging.
Adelaide Showground Farmers Market, Willunga Farmers Market are my favourite markets in Adelaide but check your local area. There are many farmers’ markets around Adelaide and all of Australia that it’s probably not that much further than your local supermarket.
