Apples- What your Favourite?
APPLES, APPLES AND MORE APPLES!
Are you old enough to remember the old saying- "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away"? Whether you are or not, apples are a great addition to a healthy diet and are a quick and easy snack.
But why are apples really good for you?
Like all fruit and vegetables, they are powerhouses, packed full of nutrients- real food straight from nature, great for you and your gut.
When it comes to fruit, apples were a staple in my lunch box as a kid. Mum used to buy red apples for us and the granny smiths (green ones) for cooking.
I used to swap the red ones for a green one when mum wasn’t looking. I loved the crispy tart flavour of the Granny Smith apples, and I still do today.
Here in South Australia, Lenswood Apples grow many different varieties of apples including Royal Gala, Pink Lady, Fuji, and my favourite Granny Smith.
But there is more to apples than just the colour, they are loaded with nutrients that are great for your whole body.
Apples are low GI (glycaemic index) which means they are low carb and they release sugar slowly into the bloodstream, to provide a longer-lasting source of energy, They are rich in fibre which is great for digestion and can even help prevent weight gain. Your gut bugs just love all that fibre.
Apples contain vitamin C, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc and B vitamins. They also contain many bioactive phytochemicals that have been researched and the benefits include -
# Boosting your immune system
# Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels
# A lower risk of stroke
# A lower risk of Type 2 Diabetes
# Preventing weight gain
# Reduced risk of lung, breast and digestive tract cancers
