Have A Berry Good Day- Everyday

Berries are delicious, and nutritious and rank as one of the healthiest foods you can add to your diet. How do you like to eat berries?

I love to add them to my favourite smoothie, eat them with yoghurt and muesli or just on their own as an awesome sweet snack.

The most commonly eaten berries are strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, but in actual fact, there are many more varieties including-

  • blackberries

  • acai berries

  • bilberries

  • elderberries

  • cranberries

  • goji berries

Berries are small, amazing powerhouses- they contain many bioactive antioxidants including anthocyanins, resveratrol and ellagic acid which protects your cells from damage.

Blueberries, blackberries and raspberries have the highest amount of antioxidants of all fruits, due to the anthocyanin content that gives them their blue/black colour.

Berries are a great source of fibre, vitamin C, manganese, vitamin K, copper and folate, and are great for everyone.

Strawberries contain the most vitamin C- 1 cup of strawberries provides 150% of your RDI (recommended daily intake).

And how about their health benefits?

Eating just half a cup of berries a day may help many areas of your health -

#1 Improve blood sugar and insulin levels

#2 Help fight inflammation

#3 Lower cholesterol levels

#4 Reduce wrinkles and sun-damaged skin

#5 Improve blood pressure and blood flow

Whilst berries are best when consumed fresh, studies have found that frozen berries also have health benefits.

I always keep a bag of frozen berries in my freezer for that odd occasion that I have forgotten to pick some up from the local fruit and veg shop.
