Does Pineapple belong on a pizza?

What’s your favourite way to eat pineapple?

Pineapple is the perfect summer fruit, you can eat them any time of the year, grown in tropical areas around the world and here in Australia.

I love eating pineapple freshly cut as a snack, in a salad or grilled on the barbeque with a steak.

And there is nothing better than a glass of fresh pineapple juice over ice when it’s hot.

But nothing divides a room more than pineapple on a pizza

I’ve had many a heated debate on the subject. My favourite way to eat pineapple is on a home-made vegetarian pizza- I’m on team pineapple and hubby is not.

The truth is you either love it or you don't, and that's ok, because we all make our own choices when it comes to food, including pineapple.

But why you should eat pineapple regularly, whether its’s on a pizza or any other way? It’s really good for you, that’s why!

The real benefits of eating pineapple

Pineapple really is a super food, it’s wide ranging health benefits including helping with digestion, boosting the immune system, and it's ability to reduce inflammation- the underlying cause of many chronic health conditions.

Pineapples are rich in antioxidants, are low in calories and one cup contains more than your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, to help you stay healthy and ward of all those nasty cold and flu bugs that are so annoying this time of year.

Vitamin C is essential for the immune system, for healthy growth and development in children and aids in the absorption of iron from your food- that's why I love to have pineapple on the barbeque with my steak. Iron and vitamin C is a powerful duo that everyone needs daily.

Pineapples contain natural digestive enzymes called bromelain, that assists in protein metabolism. Proteins are the building blocks of your DNA and essential for health.

Bromelain aids in the breakdown of protein so it can be more easily absorbed into the digestive system .

The power of bioactives

Pineapple also contains powerful bioactive antioxidant compounds- flavonoids and phenolic acids. These bioactive compounds help the body to use the antioxidants from pineapples, so they have a longer lasting effect.

Pineapples contain a whole range of other essential vitamins and minerals including B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin A, potassium, zinc, calcium.

Pineapple has been heavily researched for more than 50 years for it's anti-inflammatory benefits for arthritis, and for assisting in recovery after surgery or strenuous exercise.

Research has also suggested that pineapple- due to the bromelain- reduces inflammation and may have a benefit in reducing your risk of cancer.

Pineapple really is a great addition to your breakfast, in a smoothie, added to a salad or served with protein for dinner. And of course on a Pizza!
